PSA History

In 1919, the emergence of Filipino American pride and unity was seen when the Philippine Illini became an organization at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The Philippine Illini started with 22 members and was the first Asian American organization on the UIUC campus; eventually giving rise to the many Asian American interest groups that exist today. Decades later, this idea of Filipino-American culture is stronger than ever on the U of I campus. Currently under the name, the Philippine Student Association (PSA), as a registered student organization at UIUC and a program under the University YMCA, PSA promotes Filipino-American unification through events that inform the campus, the surrounding communities, and other colleges about Filipino culture and how it influences us as Americans. PSA provides diversity and family orientation with members of different ethnicity. The established committees allow PSA members to become actively involved in the planning of PSA's social, academic, and cultural programs.
